From an idea,to a working system.✳

A long conversation is not simply the entire history sent to the model again. In Alcuin, I organize context as a budgeted input: the request, conversation history, retrieved knowledge, and tool results all occupy limited space. Understanding what makes up that input provides a basis for deciding what to retain.

Compression is not the same as deletion. A summary carries information needed for the current reasoning, while the original records provide a route back to its sources. Where compression happened and what it drew from need to remain explainable. Assessing an output can then start with specific inputs, rather than the final answer alone.

Tool execution also needs to be understood separately from a page connection. Alcuin presents progress through resumable event streams, allowing a reconnected interface to continue receiving updates. For me, explainability includes what happened, how far the work progressed, and which results still need checking—not only the reasoning offered by the model.

In interactions such as point-cloud annotation, the data shown on screen need not be the complete dataset. Rendering can sample what it displays, but annotation writes must refer to original records and clearly identified objects. I treat these as separate responsibilities so a display decision does not quietly change what gets persisted.

Completing an interaction and saving its data are different states. Selection, editing, submission, and failure feedback need to tell the user what their action accomplished. In my work on the annotation interface, I pay particular attention to how these states connect: the certainty conveyed by the interface should match what the system has actually completed.

An annotation tool extends beyond its canvas. Import, task handling, review, and export together determine whether the results can move forward. Developing the platform has made me more attentive to consistent rules between these stages. Once an individual tool feels usable, it still needs to be checked against permissions, workflow states, and the expected deliverable.

FlowShelf provides a temporary place for files without taking over the files themselves. I chose to preserve their original locations and keep collection separate from moving or copying. Dragging items out still follows Finder’s file semantics. That boundary matters more to me than whether the interface merely resembles a system component.

Many details of a native experience happen between windows. The floating shelf uses NSPanel, so its appearance, focus behavior, and response to an incoming drag need to cooperate with the current application. I treat it as a brief stop within an existing operation, rather than another workspace the user must repeatedly switch into.

Quick Look makes it possible to check content before a file continues to its destination. Preview, selection, and dragging need to work from the same source information, while keeping it clear that the file remains in its original location. With a utility this small, I care most about removing a moment of hesitation from each use.
